Chapter 7 Reflection- Nalezny

I think the process of making text in the past is daunting. The amount of precision and patience to work the machinery is impressive. One wrong placement of a piece of metal type could ruin the whole text. With that being said, I think the amount of time put into these creations makes everything more meaningful. People really cared about what they wanted to say because they couldn’t just delete something like we can now. Using something like a Linotype, which just looks intimidating, meant a person cared a lot about what they had to say.
This chapter has a lot to do with man operating a machine, to the machine operating man. Putting type into a steel frame, assembling matrices, inserting a lens and film, all of this done by hand. The image on 127 (7-15) even shows the people working the machines. Then the computer comes along and we are still typing what we want to say. However, in a less extensive way. Then, on page 131 it mentions apps. They provide so much for us so we don’t have to do a thing. It even calculates numbers for us. It makes me think of the amount of time we spend on our phones. They draw us in, almost controlling us. Just as people controlled the machines before. I think this transformation is very interesting.
