Chpater 5 Reflection
Chapter 5 relied heavily on the word syntax and just how big
of a role it plays in the life of graphic designers. Syntax is essentially the
use of typographic design. Typographic design encompasses the column, the
margin, the letter, word, and line. All of these elements of typographic design
work towards guiding the readers eye around the page, and in many cases,
sending a subliminal message.
Chapter 5 brings forth an interesting idea of the letters on
a page interacting with the white space. I think that in this interaction is
where a lot of a work’s success can come from, as the visual hierarchies are
often the key to whether or not a work is successful. There are also other
elements that make up success. Successful typographic communication relies on a
free-flowing dialogues between repetition and contrast.
The work covered in chapter 4 helped usher in chapter 5, as
I now know more about how crucial the spacing and alignment of images and text
of the page can be in determining if the work is enjoyed and comprehended.

One of the most memorable portions of Chapter 5, was the final quote on page 86 states, “It is the existence of intangible elements, the negative, in the architectonic forms which makes them come alive, become human, naturally harmonic with one another…” This quote sort of spoke to me directly when it mentioned humanizing the forms in typographic communication. It is my job, as a designer, to ensure that the work I create is relatable in the most human way possible.
