Chapter 4 & 5 Reflection: Dene Absher

Chapter 4.

Chapter 4 is all about The Typographic Grid. I really liked reading and seeing examples of this because it showed me the different ways to grid a page. I really don't have much experience with the design grids and framework, so this is a very appealing chapter for me. This chapter makes note that a single person or people are not responsible for the modern grid, but that many people have attributed to the modern grid.  I love that it hasn't stuck to one specific design throughout the years. We are always evolving and so is typeface, so on the design front I love that the grid has evolved so much. I personally have more of a coding background so when it comes to design, I do not know all of the vocabulary. This chapter really helped me a lot with the visual photos they displayed along with the history of grids.

Chapter 5.

Syntax is a language that must be learned for typography. I had no idea what that word meant until reading this chapter. Letters, words, lines, columns, and margins are all made into whole while using typographic space, visual hierarchy, and grid systems. Already after 2 weeks of this class I know what typographic space, visual hierarchy and grid systems are, but I didn't fully understand how putting everything together is really important to typography. I just love how detailed typography has to be. The visual linking and connecting of elements to form advertising and market materials, logos, ect. On page 104 (fig. 5-54) I love the poster displayed, it shows the same object but being modified by colors and shape and it is very visually pleasing and it shows how many options you have while creating such things.

  1. As first year design student, I also don't have very much experience with typographic grids and frameworks. I 100% learned a lot from this chapter because of that. I agree that it was interesting to see that there are so many different layouts and ways to format text and visuals. In your chapter five reflection you talk about how much you have learned in only two weeks of this class. It is actually quite incredible how much I have learned as well about typography in such a short amount of time.
